引入情境

学习重点与难点

学习重点

  • A comparison is only as good as its scope: parties, market, product, period, metric and treatment of returns.
  • The four dimensions separate cases that share a label but not a business.
  • Facts, inferences and judgements need different evidence; a conclusion must state what it does not show.

可能的难点

  • Students compare gross sales with net revenue, or a month with a single livestream session, and then treat the ratio as a finding.
  • They slide from an observed difference to a cause without naming a competing explanation.
  • They write recommendations as if they were observations, which makes the claim impossible to test.

核心概念

是什么 · 为什么重要 · 如何解释案例 · 与相近概念的区别

Comparability and scope

是什么
Comparability is the degree to which two cases can be placed on the same metric after aligning six choices: parties, market, product, period, unit (value or count) and treatment of returns. §1.3's contrast between ecommerce and traditional commerce is itself a scope choice, not a claim that one is more efficient.
为什么重要
Without alignment, a precise ratio is still meaningless; most bad comparisons fail before any arithmetic begins.
如何解释案例
Write the six choices at the top of the comparison sheet and refuse to compare until each case has an entry.
与相近概念的区别
Comparable is not identical. Two different models can be compared after alignment, but the conclusion must stay inside the aligned scope.
如何运作
State the six choices in one sentence per case, then convert both cases to the same unit and period.
条件与限制
Some differences cannot be aligned, such as return definitions or informal bookkeeping; record them as limitations rather than forcing a number.

Four-dimension comparison

是什么
A table with four rows or columns: parties (company, individual, platform; consumer or business buyer), ownership (inventory, price, customer relationship, data), channel (discovery and transaction), and purchase occasion (planned or impulsive; payment and delivery context).
为什么重要
Cases that share the label B2C can differ on all four dimensions, and those differences explain costs, returns and repeat purchase better than the label does.
如何解释案例
Fill one row per case, then circle the single difference most likely to explain the outcome being studied.
与相近概念的区别
The four dimensions are an analytical order, not a causal model; they generate hypotheses and do not prove causation.
如何运作
Ask who sells, who owns, how the buyer finds and pays, and what the buyer was doing when the need arose.
条件与限制
The table can become a checklist that hides interaction effects; two dimensions may jointly produce the outcome, so note combinations.

Fact, inference and judgement

是什么
A fact is a verifiable observation within a stated scope; an inference explains why something happened; a value judgement says what should be done or what is better. §3.1.1's account of post-purchase behaviour is a framework for inference, not a fact about a particular seller.
为什么重要
Each type is tested differently: facts against records, inferences against alternatives and data, judgements against values and trade-offs. Mixing them makes discussion untestable.
如何解释案例
Label every sentence F, I or J before debating it; rewrite any sentence that carries two labels.
与相近概念的区别
An inference can be refuted by evidence; a judgement can only be argued. A judgement disguised as a fact is the most common error in case reports.
如何运作
Ask: could I show this to someone with a record? If not, it is not a fact. Does it claim a cause? Then it is an inference. Does it contain should, better or ought? Then it is a judgement.
条件与限制
The boundary can blur when a fact is contested or an inference is overwhelmingly supported; state the uncertainty rather than forcing a label.

Alternative explanations and evidence grading

是什么
A competing cause for the same observation plus an observable test that would distinguish it. The course grades evidence as first-hand records, operator-published data with a stated scope, direct observation or interview, media relay, and model or inference (not evidence of fact).
为什么重要
The first plausible explanation is rarely the only one; without a test, a case study becomes a story that confirms what the writer already believed.
如何解释案例
Write two alternatives for the main outcome, give each a metric, and say what result would weaken your preferred explanation.
与相近概念的区别
An alternative must be distinguishable by data; otherwise it is just another story. Evidence grade is not the same as relevance: a strong record can still be irrelevant to the question.
如何运作
Name the outcome, list three causes, choose the two that predict different observations, and specify the comparison or time split that separates them.
条件与限制
Some alternatives cannot be tested with available data; in that case the conclusion must say the case is underdetermined.

知识解释

This is a workshop, not a lecture. Three seller profiles are placed on the table, and the task is to compare them without flattening their differences. The profiles are teaching fiction written for this course; they are not real students, shops or transactions. That matters because the lesson is about method, not about discovering which real business is better. By the end, each group must produce a comparison table, a set of labelled claims, two alternative explanations and one bounded conclusion. The quality of the conclusion depends on the discipline of the steps before it.

The first temptation is to compare headlines. One seller reports monthly revenue, another reports sales per livestream, a third reports weekly orders. The numbers look commensurable because they are all money or counts, but they answer different questions. Scope alignment fixes this: who is the party, which market, which product, over what period, measured in value or units, and whether returns are deducted. A comparison that skips these six choices will produce a conclusion that cannot be checked. The §1.3 contrast between ecommerce and traditional commerce is useful here: online versus offline is one dimension, not a verdict about efficiency.

The second step is the four-dimension table. Parties: is the seller a company, an individual or a platform, and is the buyer a consumer or a business? Ownership: who holds inventory, who sets price, who owns the customer relationship and the data? Channel: how does the buyer discover the offer, and where does the transaction complete? Occasion: is the purchase planned or impulsive, and what payment and delivery context surrounds it? The four dimensions are not a causal model. They are a way to keep unlike cases from collapsing into one another, and to see which difference is likely to matter.

Then attach evidence. Case A has paper sales books, supplier receipts and the owner's account; Case B has a platform backend export; Case C has chat logs and market receipts. These are not equally strong for every claim. A backend export is strong for orders and returns inside that store, but silent about why customers bought. An owner's account is strong for decisions and weak for prevalence. A chat log is strong for what was said and weak for whether the customer would have bought elsewhere. The course uses a simple grading: first-hand records, operator-published data with a stated scope, direct observation or interview, media relay, and finally model or inference, which is not evidence of fact.

The third step separates fact, inference and judgement. A fact is verifiable within a stated scope: B's backend shows 1,020 orders in March. An inference explains: B sells more because the host is persuasive. A judgement says what should be: A should close the shop. The three can appear in one paragraph, but they must be labelled, because each is tested differently. Facts are checked against records; inferences against alternative explanations and data; judgements against values and trade-offs. When a judgement is written as a fact, discussion becomes a contest of preferences.

The fourth step is the alternative explanation. B's volume could come from lower prices, a returning customer base, platform traffic support, seasonal demand for home textiles, or host skill. Each has a test: average order value, share of new versus returning customers, traffic source, the same host selling a different category, and the promotion calendar before and after the session. If two explanations predict the same observation, the case is underdetermined and the honest answer is that the evidence cannot decide. This is not a failure of the analysis; it is the analysis working.

Five errors recur. Single-cause attribution turns one plausible reason into the reason. Survivorship bias studies only the sellers still trading. Level mixing compares a platform's growth with a shop's revenue. Scope drift changes the denominator midway, for example comparing A's monthly revenue with B's best session. Precision bias treats a decimal as proof. Each error can be corrected by a question: what else could produce this, who is missing from the sample, at what level is the claim, is the denominator constant, and what is the margin of error?

A bounded conclusion names its limits. A useful template is: for this type of seller, in this market, selling this product through this channel, during this period, the evidence supports this claim; it does not support that larger claim. For example: for a four-person team selling home textiles on one platform in 2026, three two-hour sessions a week covered ad spend and returns; this does not show that livestreaming outperforms physical shops in Dhaka. The second clause is not decoration. It prevents a local observation from becoming a universal law.

The workshop runs in five moves: read the profiles, align scope, fill the four dimensions, label claims and write alternatives, then draft the conclusion. Groups of four divide roles - one keeps the scope, one fills the table, one checks evidence, one writes the conclusion - and then exchange sheets. Peer review asks only two questions: which claim is unlabelled, and which conclusion is unbounded? The teacher does not supply the answer; the teacher asks for the missing test.

The assessment rewards process, not rhetoric. Scope alignment carries two points, the four dimensions two, fact-inference separation two, alternatives with tests two, and the bounded conclusion two. A group that writes a modest, well-bounded answer scores higher than one that writes a confident, unbounded one. This is also the habit needed outside the classroom: most claims about ecommerce are local observations travelling without their scope. The workshop trains the reader to ask where a number came from before asking what it means.

例子

Example 1: 1,020 orders, two denominators

B reports 1,020 March orders at a US$34 average, or US$34,680 gross; after a 12% return rate, net sales are about US$30,518. A reports US$6,800 net for the same month. Before calling B five times larger, align the metric: gross versus net, and one store versus one shop.

用到的概念: Scope alignment.

Example 2: one sentence, three labels

"A's customers care only about price, so the shop should close" contains an inference about motivation and a judgement about action, but no fact. A testable version starts with the record: 60% of last month's customers asked for a photo before visiting; then asks what they compared.

用到的概念: Fact, inference and judgement.

案例

教学情境(虚构,用于分析)

Case: three seller profiles (teaching fiction)

背景与时间
All three profiles, figures and quotations are teaching fiction written by the teacher; they describe no real student, shop or transaction. Case A is a family clothing shop in Dhaka; Case B is a four-person home-textile livestream team in Hangzhou; Case C is an individual reseller in Nairobi.
面临的问题
The three cases share the appearance of selling, but their parties, ownership, channels and occasions differ. The task is to build a defensible comparison, label every claim and write a conclusion that does not overreach.
有证据的做法
A: 18 m² shop, two staff, rent US$420 a month, average sale US$22, March net sales US$6,800, 60% of last month's customers asked for a photo on WhatsApp before visiting, cash and bKash, 4% in-store exchanges. B: four people, three two-hour sessions a week, March 1,020 orders, average order US$34, 12% returns, 45% returning customers, 5% commission, US$300 ad spend per session. C: individual reseller, 90 orders in March, average order US$18, 15% markup, buys after the order, no stock, motorbike delivery, cash on delivery. Build a four-dimension table, label six statements, write two alternatives for B's volume and one bounded conclusion.
可观察的结果
A complete answer would show: A and B are both B2C but differ in ownership of the customer relationship (A owns it; B rents the audience from the platform); C is closer to individual resale, with no stock and no platform. A's channel is offline plus messaging, B's is platform live, C's is messaging plus market sourcing. A's occasion is planned and try-before-buy, B's is impulsive and entertainment-led, C's is convenience and cash-on-delivery. Evidence differs in kind: paper records, backend export and chat logs. These are expected comparisons, not findings about real sellers.
对应概念
Comparability and scope; four-dimension comparison; fact, inference and judgement; alternative explanations and evidence grading.

讨论问题

  1. Fill the four-dimension table for A, B and C, and mark the single difference most likely to explain returns.
  2. Which cost is most likely underestimated in each case, and what record would reveal it?
  3. Write two alternative explanations for B's order volume, each with a test that could distinguish it.
  4. Write one bounded conclusion comparing A and B, including what the comparison cannot show.

教师分析提示

Do not let groups compare gross with net or a month with a session. Ask for the six scope choices before the table. When a group asserts a cause, ask what else would produce the same pattern. The best answers will say 'cannot decide' for at least one question.

One experience is one sample; it can suggest a hypothesis but cannot establish prevalence.

常见说法

A recommendation is a finding.

需要澄清

Should-claims are judgements, not observations, and cannot be tested as facts.

常见说法

Different models cannot be compared.

需要澄清

After aligning scopes they can, provided the conclusion stays inside the aligned scope.

常见说法

Precise numbers are credible.

需要澄清

A precise number with the wrong scope is more dangerous than a rough estimate with the right one.

课堂讨论

  1. Which of the six scope choices is most often skipped in everyday comparisons, and what does skipping it hide?
  2. Is B's higher order volume evidence of a better business? What would you need to see?
  3. Rewrite 'A should move online' as a testable inference plus a bounded recommendation.
