引入情境

学习重点与难点

学习重点

  • B2B is defined by buyer, purpose and process, not by order size alone.
  • Each actor earns differently: factory on production, stall on consolidation, trader on service, platform on membership and advertising.
  • Comparing quotes means comparing landed cost, lead time, minimum order and risk - not just unit price.

可能的难点

  • Students equate B2B with "large amount". A large personal purchase is still B2C; a small business order can still be B2B.
  • The four actors are treated as a sequence. In reality one batch of goods can pass through a factory, a stall, a platform and a trading company at the same time.
  • Platform fees are forgotten when calculating cost, although they are part of acquiring a B2B customer.

核心概念

是什么 · 为什么重要 · 如何解释案例 · 与相近概念的区别

B2B transaction

是什么
A transaction between companies - manufacturer with wholesaler, or wholesaler with retailer. Textbook §2.3.1 adds larger quantities, greater specifications and longer lead times, often with recurring purchases.
为什么重要
The buyer is an organisation buying for operations, so approval, specifications and payment terms matter more than a single click.
如何解释案例
Use it to decide whether a case needs an RFQ, sample and contract, or a normal product page.
与相近概念的区别
B2B is not "a big order". A company buying one sample is still B2B; an individual buying 100 items is still B2C.
如何运作
The buyer specifies requirements, requests a quotation, evaluates samples, negotiates terms and places a contract or repeat order.
条件与限制
Small B2B orders increasingly resemble B2C checkout on platforms, so the boundary is operational as well as conceptual.

Four supply actors

是什么
Factory (production), trader or wholesale stall (consolidation and export service), B2B platform (online matching), overseas business buyer (wholesale import).
为什么重要
Each actor removes a different obstacle: capacity, assortment, paperwork or search. Their costs explain the quote differences.
如何解释案例
For any quote, ask who performs production, who consolidates, who matches and who buys.
与相近概念的区别
A stall is not a factory; a platform is not a trader; a trading company may own no production assets.
如何运作
Goods flow from factory to consolidation to export; information and money flow through the platform and trader.
条件与限制
Actors overlap and change roles: a factory may sell directly, a trader may own a brand, a platform may offer logistics.

B2B platform business model

是什么
Textbook §2.3.3 notes that Alibaba.com charges sellers membership or service fees that vary by category (up to about RMB 150,000 per year in the textbook's account) and also earns advertising revenue; DHgate uses a small-wholesale model.
为什么重要
For the seller, the fee is a fixed acquisition cost that must be recovered across orders; for the buyer, the platform lowers search and verification costs.
如何解释案例
Add membership and advertising to the unit cost before comparing platform selling with direct selling.
与相近概念的区别
A platform fee is not a commission on each sale; it is usually a membership or service fee plus advertising.
如何运作
Sellers pay for a storefront and visibility; buyers search, compare and inquire; the platform provides messaging and sometimes settlement.
条件与限制
Fees and packages change; always check current official terms rather than treating the textbook figure as permanent.

Actor overlap

是什么
One order can involve a factory, a stall, a platform and a trading company at once; the same firm can also play several roles.
为什么重要
If you assume a single actor, you misread both cost and responsibility. The entity that invoices is not always the entity that produces.
如何解释案例
Draw the chain and label each actor's task, revenue and risk before comparing quotes.
与相近概念的区别
The seller on the platform is the contracting party; the factory may be a supplier behind it.
如何运作
Follow the goods, the documents and the money separately; they may travel through different organisations.
条件与限制
Overlap can hide accountability. Ask who signs the contract, who inspects quality and who handles claims.

知识解释

Begin with why B2B looks different from shopping. Textbook §2.3.1 defines B2B as transactions between businesses and adds three practical features: larger quantities, greater specifications and longer lead times. It also notes that buyers may need recurring supply for repeated production. These features explain why a B2B page is organised around inquiries, quotations and samples rather than a buy button.

A second feature follows from the first: approval. A large purchase such as machinery usually needs sign-off from company leaders, so the buying process is longer and involves more people than a consumer decision. Pricing is negotiated, and payment terms are part of the deal. The textbook is explicit in §2.3.4: B2C consumers often pay the same price for the same item, while B2B firms negotiate prices and payment terms, and B2B volume is far larger.

But B2B is not defined by size alone. The test is buyer and purpose: a company buying for operations is B2B even if the order is small; an individual buying many items for personal use is still B2C. This matters because the same seller can serve both. A clothing firm may sell one shirt to a consumer and 1,000 to a retailer; the first is B2C, the second B2B, and the pricing, contract and delivery differ.

The global picture is often misread. Textbook §2.3.2, citing UNCTAD, puts US B2B ecommerce at about US$8.3 trillion, roughly 38% of the US$21.84 trillion global B2B market. Adding B2B and B2C, the US ranks first at over US$9 trillion, Japan second at over US$3 trillion, China third at over US$2 trillion, and Korea fourth at over US$1 trillion. Note the scope: this is a B2B-heavy total, not the B2C league table. It does not contradict China ranking first in B2C online retail.

Now the actors. A factory produces; it earns from production and capacity utilisation. A trader or wholesale stall consolidates: it fills categories, pools small orders into a container, prepares export documents and sometimes finances the deal; it earns a margin or service fee. A B2B platform matches: it provides listings, search, messaging and sometimes settlement; it earns membership or service fees and advertising. The overseas business buyer purchases for resale or production and bears import risk.

These actors often overlap. One batch of locks may be produced by a factory, sold through a Yiwu stall, transacted on a platform and declared by a trading company. If you assume one actor, you will misread both cost and responsibility. The platform seller is the contracting party; the factory may be a supplier behind it. Ask who signs the contract, who inspects quality, who handles customs and who answers a claim.

Platform economics deserve separate attention. The textbook notes that Alibaba.com charges sellers membership or service fees that vary by category, up to about RMB 150,000 per year in its account, and also earns advertising revenue; DHgate uses a small-wholesale model. For a seller, this is a fixed acquisition cost: it must be spread across orders. For a buyer, the platform lowers search and verification costs, which is why buyers tolerate platform prices above factory quotes.

This is exactly the puzzle in the three quotes. The factory at US$3.20 is cheapest per unit but demands 5,000 units and 45 days. The stall at US$3.50 can pool 2,000 units in two weeks but may have less control over production quality. The trading company at US$3.40 handles customs and consolidation and accepts a 30% deposit, which reduces the buyer's workload and cash risk. The right choice depends on cash, urgency, quality control and who can absorb a failure.

A practical comparison therefore has five columns: landed cost, lead time, minimum order, payment terms and risk allocation. Add the platform fee or trader margin where it belongs, and state the conditions under which the recommendation holds. "The factory is cheapest" is not a recommendation; "the factory is cheapest if you can order 5,000 units, wait 45 days and inspect quality yourself" is.

例子

Example 1: same product, different seller

A lock sold by a factory on Alibaba.com, by a Yiwu stall and by a trading company may be identical. The difference lies in minimum order, consolidation, export paperwork and who accepts the risk.

用到的概念: Four actors and actor overlap.

Example 2: 1688 is not Alibaba.com

1688 is a domestic wholesale platform for buyers inside China; Alibaba.com is an international B2B marketplace for overseas buyers. Similar interfaces do not mean the same market or currency.

用到的概念: B2B platform scope.

案例

教学情境(虚构,用于分析)

Case: three quotes for 2,000 door locks (teaching case)

背景与时间
Fictional RFQ for practising supply-chain analysis; it does not represent a real transaction. A Lagos buyer needs 2,000 door locks for a hardware retailer and asks three parties to quote.
面临的问题
The quotes differ in unit price, minimum order, lead time, payment terms and who handles export. The buyer must choose, but the cheapest unit price may not be the lowest landed cost or the safest option.
有证据的做法
Quote A (factory): US$3.20 per unit ex-works, minimum 5,000 units, 45 days, 50% deposit. Quote B (Yiwu stall): US$3.50, 2,000 units pooled with other orders, two weeks, 30% deposit, buyer arranges freight. Quote C (trading company): US$3.40, 2,000 units, 25 days, 30% deposit, handles export documents, consolidation and booking.
可观察的结果
No real cost or sales data are used. The observable differences are commercial terms, not product quality. For 2,000 units, Quote A is not executable at the requested quantity; B is fastest but leaves freight and quality control to the buyer; C costs more per unit than B but bundles services and shifts some operational risk.
对应概念
B2B features; four actors; actor overlap; platform and service fees as acquisition cost.

讨论问题

  1. Calculate the unit-price gap between B and C, then list the services C provides for that gap.
  2. Which quote would you choose if the retailer needs the locks in three weeks? State two conditions.
  3. Which quote would you choose if the buyer can wait and wants the lowest landed cost? What must the buyer do in return?
  4. Which actor should handle a quality claim in each quote, and why?

教师分析提示

Put the five comparison columns on the board and fill them with the class. Do not let students compare only unit price. Ask what "ex-works" means and who pays freight, insurance and duty under each quote. End by asking which risks are shifted rather than removed.
