- Chapter 2, §2.5, §2.7 and §2.8; Chapter 3, §3.1.1; Figure 2-10
- Lessons 1–4: business models, platforms and country profiles; Lesson 8: cross-border cost and delivery.
- This lesson explains why the same product is bought differently in different markets, and turns that comparison into page, payment, delivery and trust decisions.
- Describe a market's shopping context using six elements: who buys, where, which device, how they pay, how goods arrive and whether they trust the seller.
- Distinguish mobile commerce as a device dimension from B2B, B2C and C2C as transaction-party models.
- Compare China's mobile-first, super-app and social shopping environment with market, cash-on-delivery and data-cost realities in students' home countries.
- Use §2.8 growth figures with their year and scope, and explain why domestic Chinese ecommerce data is not cross-border data.
In Shenzhen a student opens a mini-program from a chat, pays with a mobile wallet and receives the hoodie the same day. In Nairobi her cousin orders the same hoodie, waits for an SMS, collects it from an agent, inspects it and pays cash. Same product, different sequence. Which part of that sequence is shopping, and which part is infrastructure?
- Shopping is a sequence of six conditions, not a single act of clicking buy.
- China's advantage is an integrated stack: mobile-first interfaces, super apps, social discovery, dense delivery and standard returns.
- Home-market differences in payment, pickup, data cost and trust change the page, the delivery promise and the unit economics.
- Students treat mobile commerce as a fourth transaction type beside B2B, B2C and C2C.
- They generalise from China's integrated stack to markets where cash on delivery and pickup dominate.
- They quote §2.8 growth rates without year or scope, and mix domestic online retail with cross-border trade.
Shopping context (six elements)
- The six conditions that shape a purchase: who the buyer is, where the purchase happens, which device is used, how payment is made, how the goods are delivered or collected, and whether the buyer trusts the seller enough to pay.
- Each element changes conversion and cost. A page, a payment promise and a return policy that work in one context can fail in another, and the failure looks like a marketing problem when it is an infrastructure mismatch.
- Build a six-row table for China and for a home market before choosing a channel, a payment option or a delivery promise.
- Context is observable infrastructure and habits, not national culture. Culture matters, but it is a separate explanation and should not replace evidence about devices, payment and delivery.
- For one product, write the six answers for each market, mark the two largest gaps, then name the page, payment, delivery or return change each gap requires.
- Contexts change quickly, and a table is only a snapshot. One student's experience is not a national average, and urban and rural conditions can differ sharply.
Mobile-first and super apps
- A shopping environment in which the phone is the main entry point: apps and mini-programs combine discovery, chat, payment, order tracking and service. Mobile commerce itself can be B2B, B2C or C2C.
- If the phone is the entry point, mobile page speed, mobile payment and in-app service decide conversion. Section 2.5 reports global retail m-commerce near US$2.8 trillion in 2020, up 32%, and forecasts almost US$4.5 trillion by 2024.
- Design mobile-first pages, local wallets and in-app service; test checkout on a mid-range phone and a slow connection, not only on a flagship device.
- Mobile commerce is a device dimension, not a fourth model beside B2B, B2C and C2C; the same B2C sale can happen on a phone. “Super app” is this lesson's shorthand for an app that bundles messaging, payment, services and shopping, not a textbook category.
- Map the path from discovery to content or chat, mini-program, wallet payment, delivery notification and review, and count how many times the user leaves the app.
- Super-app integration depends on platform rules, licensing and competition policy. Outside China, users often switch between several apps, so the integrated path cannot be assumed.
Home-market realities: markets, COD, pickup and data cost
- Many home markets combine strong physical markets, cash on delivery, pickup points or agents, prepaid mobile data and limited familiarity with cross-border returns.
- These conditions change the cost of reaching a customer, the risk of a refused parcel and the evidence a buyer needs before paying. A model built only on prepaid cards and home delivery misreads them.
- Estimate refusal cost under cash on delivery, and decide whether a pickup point, an agent network or a local return address is necessary before launch.
- Cash on delivery is a payment method, not a delivery method. Pickup is a delivery option, not a payment method. Trust is a judgement, not a feature that one payment provider owns.
- For a COD order, count the forward trip, the refusal rate and the return trip, then compare the expected logistics cost with a prepaid order of the same value.
- Conditions vary within a country. Urban and rural users, younger and older buyers, and different income groups may face very different device, data and delivery constraints.
From context to cross-border choices
- The same product needs different pages, payment options, delivery promises and return rules in different markets. Section 2.8 reports global retail ecommerce growth of 25.7% in 2020, 17.1% in 2021 and 12.2% in 2022.
- A growth rate describes a market, not a seller. Domestic Chinese online retail and global retail ecommerce are different scopes from cross-border ecommerce, and mixing them produces false opportunities.
- Quote a growth rate only with three labels: indicator, year and scope. Then ask what share of that market a small seller can realistically reach.
- Global retail ecommerce, which includes domestic sales, is not cross-border ecommerce. China's domestic online retail is not China's cross-border exports. A device trend is not a transaction model.
- Write the sentence as “indicator + year + scope”. If one label is missing, do not use the number in a decision.
- Definitions and revisions differ across sources. Forecasts are not results, and textbook figures stop at their publication year.
Shopping context (six elements)
Mobile-first and super apps
Home-market realities: markets, COD, pickup and data cost
From context to cross-border choices
Put the same hoodie in two cities and the purchase stops looking like one behaviour. In Shenzhen a student opens a mini-program from a chat, pays with a mobile wallet and receives the parcel the same day. In Nairobi her cousin opens a marketplace app, waits for an SMS, walks to an agent, inspects the item and pays cash. The product is identical; the sequence is not. This lesson calls that sequence the shopping context: who buys, where the purchase happens, which device is used, how payment is made, how the goods arrive, and whether the buyer trusts the seller enough to pay.
The six elements are a checklist, not a theory of culture. Who buys covers income, age, household and whether the buyer is a consumer or a small business. Where covers the physical market, the mall, the app, the social feed or the chat group. Device covers phone model, screen, data plan and page speed. Payment covers wallet, card, bank transfer, cash on delivery and credit. Delivery covers parcel networks, pickup points, agents and same-day couriers. Trust covers reviews, platform guarantees, inspection rights and the return address. Change any one and the same page can convert in one market and fail in another.
China's context is unusually integrated. Section 2.5 defines mobile commerce as transactions on wireless handheld devices and explicitly says it can be B2B, B2C or C2C. That sentence matters: mobile commerce is a device dimension, not a fourth transaction type beside B2B, B2C and C2C. The same B2C sale can be mobile; a B2B order can also be placed on a phone. The textbook reports that global retail m-commerce reached almost US$2.8 trillion in 2020, growing 32%, and forecasts almost US$4.5 trillion by 2024 (Figure 2-10, eMarketer data). Those are global retail figures, and the second number is a forecast, not a result.
On top of the device sits an integrated stack. Payment apps such as Alipay and WeChat Pay let users pay without swiping a card; social platforms added buy buttons; mini-programs let a retailer offer catalogue, checkout and service inside a chat app; and dense parcel and same-city delivery networks make short promises credible. The textbook describes these pieces separately under mobile and social commerce. The label “super app” is this lesson's shorthand for an app that bundles messaging, payment, services and shopping. The analytical point is not the label but the integration: discovery, payment, delivery and service sit in one place, so the customer rarely leaves the phone.
Many home markets assemble the same pieces differently. In Kenya, M-PESA is a mainstream way to send and receive money, and the Communications Authority reported 45.36 million mobile-money subscriptions and 416,994 registered agents in the first quarter of 2025. Pickup is normal: Jumia's own rural report describes more than 300 pickup points and over 26,000 JForce agents in Kenya. In Bangladesh, a Dhaka survey found cash on delivery still dominant, while Bangladesh Bank reported 238.08 million registered mobile-financial-service clients, 89.38 million active accounts and 1,841,979 agents in February 2025. These are different starting points, not failures to become China.
Two conditions deserve separate attention. The first is data cost. When mobile data is prepaid and expensive relative to income, a heavy page is not a design preference; it is a barrier. A catalogue that loads in three seconds on a flagship phone may take far longer on a mid-range device, and every extra image is paid for by the user. The second is trust. A prepaid buyer risks money before seeing the goods; a cash-on-delivery buyer risks time and a possible argument at the counter. Reviews, platform guarantees, inspection at pickup and a local return address reduce different parts of that risk. Trust is a judgement about predictability, not a personality trait.
For the seller, context becomes a set of design and cost decisions. A mobile-first page needs compressed images, a short checkout and a payment method the buyer already uses. A delivery promise must match the network: next day is credible in a dense city and misleading where parcels move through agents. Returns must name an address the buyer can reach. The unit economics change too. In a teaching simulation, a US$18 cash-on-delivery order with US$3 forward freight and a 20% refusal rate carries an expected logistics cost of US$3.60 before packing, because one in five parcels makes a return trip. A prepaid order does not carry that refusal leg. The numbers are illustrative, but the structure is real.
Numbers about the market need three labels: indicator, year and scope. Section 2.8 reports global retail ecommerce growth of 25.7% in 2020, 17.1% in 2021 and 12.2% in 2022, with about 2.56 billion online shoppers in 2022 growing only 3.4%. It also puts global retail ecommerce at about US$5.2 trillion in 2021. None of these is a cross-border figure. Global retail ecommerce includes domestic sales; China's domestic online retail is not China's cross-border exports; and a statement that ecommerce grew 12.2% does not mean that cross-border ecommerce grew 12.2%. A seller who drops the scope label turns a market statistic into a false promise.
The practical output of this lesson is a six-row table for each market, with the two largest gaps marked. That table is more useful than a list of national stereotypes because it points to specific changes: a lighter page, a wallet, a pickup option, a local return address, a different promise. It also prepares the next lesson. If context explains whether a purchase is possible, consumer decision stages explain how the buyer moves from need to purchase and beyond. Section 3.1.1 gives that path, and Lesson 10 walks it with a pair of shoes.
Example 1: one hoodie, two checkout paths
Shenzhen: chat link, mini-program, wallet payment, same-day delivery, review inside the app. Nairobi: marketplace search, SMS, agent pickup, inspection, cash payment. The item is the same; the six-element sequence and the trust moment are not.
Shopping context has six elements, and the trust moment differs by payment method.
Example 2: the cost of a refusal (teaching simulation)
A US$18 COD order with US$3 forward freight and a 20% refusal rate carries an expected logistics cost of US$3.60 before packing, because one in five parcels makes a return trip. A prepaid order does not carry that refusal leg. The figures are illustrative, not market data.
Payment method changes unit economics, not only convenience.
Case: one hoodie, three checkout paths (teaching case)
- Fictional teaching case; the three buyers and the funnel counts are invented and do not describe real students or a real seller. One US$19 hoodie is offered in Shenzhen, Nairobi and Dhaka. Market conditions draw on SRC-070, SRC-071, SRC-073, SRC-076 and SRC-078; buyer details are simulated.
- The seller wants one landing page, one payment option and one return promise for all three markets. Trial traffic suggests that the binding constraint differs: page speed in Shenzhen, trust at pickup in Nairobi, and size certainty in Dhaka. Which two changes should come first?
- Build the six-element table for each market. Run a simulated 200-visit test per market and record where buyers stop: page load, payment, delivery promise or trust evidence. Use published sources only for market conditions; treat all funnel counts as teaching simulation.
- In the simulation, Shenzhen produces 9 orders, Nairobi 4 and Dhaka 5. Three of the four Nairobi orders are cash on delivery and one is refused at pickup; two Dhaka buyers ask for a size exchange before paying; no Shenzhen buyer asks about returns. Adding a local size chart lifts Dhaka from 5 to 7, and clarifying pickup and inspection lifts Nairobi from 4 to 6; Shenzhen stays at 9 because speed was already adequate. These are teaching figures, not market research.
- Six-element shopping context; mobile-first versus pickup and COD; payment and delivery are different dimensions; data scope.
- Complete the six-element table for the three markets. Which row required evidence rather than assumption?
- Which single element explains most of the difference between Shenzhen and Nairobi? Defend your choice.
- Which two changes would you make first, and which metric would tell you whether each worked?
- Which numbers in this case cannot be used as evidence about the real market, and why?
Make groups separate observed market conditions from simulated buyer behaviour. Expect students to blame culture; push them back to device, payment, pickup and data cost. The best answers name metrics such as load time, refusal rate or size-exchange rate. Close by asking which change is cheapest to test first.

- Read the flow left to right as one purchase sequence, not as a list of separate topics.
- The first three elements shape what the buyer can see; the last three shape whether the buyer completes payment.
- The diagram is a checklist, not a ranking: the binding element differs by product and market.

Section 2.5 says m-commerce can be B2B, B2C or C2C. It is a device dimension; one transaction can carry both labels.
China's playbook can be copied into any home market.
Payment, pickup, data cost and returns differ. The same page and promise can carry very different costs and conversion.
Cash on delivery is free for the seller.
A refused parcel adds a return leg and blocked cash. The expected cost appears even when the item is eventually resold.
Local ecommerce means shops owned by local people.

The 12.2% growth in §2.8 is cross-border ecommerce growth.
It is global retail ecommerce growth in 2022, domestic sales included. Cross-border is a different scope.
A desktop page that works is enough for mobile users.
Screen, speed, data cost and payment flow change. Mobile checkout must be tested on mid-range devices and slow networks.
- Complete a six-element table for your home market and China. Which two rows differ most, and what does each difference change for a seller?
- What opportunities and risks come with a high cash-on-delivery share, and how would you reduce refusal losses without refusing COD customers?
- Which matters more for conversion in your market: cheaper mobile data or a local payment method? Explain the trade-off.
- Can one Chinese seller serve Shenzhen, Nairobi and Dhaka with one page and one return promise? What must change first?
Six-element context audit
Turn a market description into six observable conditions and two seller changes.
- 4 min Pick one product and one home market; fill the six elements without adjectives such as traditional.
- 3 min Mark the two elements that differ most from China and explain what each changes.
- 3 min Name one page, payment, delivery or return change for each gap.
- 2 min Give a 30-second verdict: what to change first and which metric will show whether it worked.
A one-page six-row table plus two prioritised changes with metrics.
Reject cultural generalisations that cannot be observed. Ask for the evidence behind each row. The best answers name metrics such as load time, COD refusal rate or pickup share rather than opinions.
